Jakobstad is situated in Ostrobothnia, along the Gulf of Bothnia. The population of Jakobstad is approximately 19,000, while the sub-region has a population of approximately 50,000. It is the 59th most populous municipality in Finland. Jakobstad covers a land area of 88.52 km2 (34.18 sq mi). The population density is 219.92/km2 (569.6/sq mi). Neighboring municipalities are Larsmo, Pedersöre, and Nykarleby. The city of Vaasa is located 98 km (61 mi) southwest of Jakobstad.
