Francavilla Fontana

Francavilla Fontana or Francavillese is an Italian town of 35935 inhabitants in the province of Brindisi in Puglia.

It is nicknamed the City of the Imperials, in honor of the Imperial princes who ruled the city continuously for about two centuries, bringing the fiefdom to the pinnacle of power. Francavilla Fontana became in that period one of the major cultural and industrial centers of the area (in the nineteenth century it was elected the district capital).

The city is located in the Salento peninsula, 35 km west of the provincial capital and 35 from Taranto, along the ancient route of the Via Appia, and is the third most populous municipality in the province.

An important agricultural, artisan, industrial (small and medium-sized enterprises) and commercial center, it is home to the National Ascension Fair, the third regional exhibition center after Bari and Foggia. In 2009 it obtained the recognition of "city of art" from the Puglia Region.
