Roncola

Roncola (Bergamasque: Róncola) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Bergamo in the Italian region of Lombardy, located about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of Milan and about 12 kilometres (7 mi) northwest of Bergamo. Roncola borders the following municipalities: Almenno San Bartolomeo, Bedulita, Capizzone, Caprino Bergamasco, Costa Valle Imagna, Palazzago, Sant'Omobono Terme, Strozza, Torre de' Busi.

Origins of the name
The toponym could date back to Roman times , given its derivation from the Latin word Roncus (meaning hillock), then translated into runcula, which would indicate an urban agglomeration located near a hillock.

History
The history of the country is still shrouded in a veil of uncertainty which does not allow to date the first permanent settlements. However, it is thought that the first inhabitants present in the area were the Romans, given their presence throughout the rest of the Imagna and Brembana valleys.

The only find of late Roman origin could be a holy water stoup, now preserved in the church of San Defendente, however difficult to place in time.

However, it was in the Middle Ages that the town began to take on a very specific physiognomy, with the numerous districts united in a single administrative entity. However, it was a very troubled period, given that bloody clashes raged in the area, much more than in other areas of the Bergamo province, between Guelphs and Ghibellines.

This is due to the fact that the Imagna valley, mainly Guelph, was in sharp contrast with the adjacent Brembilla valley, sided with the Ghibellines. Numerous fortifications were built throughout the area and Roncola, situated in a dominant and strategic position, acquired some defensive buildings, of which traces remain in the locality of Cà Baetti.

However, the chronicles do not tell of particular clashes that took place in the territory of Roncola, which probably had a secondary role in the aforementioned war events. It is known that the most prominent family was that of the Rota, as evidenced by the discovery of coats of arms of the family in some buildings located in the Mezzola district.

The following centuries saw few significant events involving the small community which, thanks to its isolation, followed the events of the rest of the province without participating in it directly.

A single jolt occurred in 1848 when Federico Alborghetti promoted the Palazzago guerrilla warfare against the Austrian rulers, whose fights went on the slopes of the Albenza up to Roncola, without involving the population. And it was in the neighborhood of the country that the patriot took refuge at the end of the revolutionary movement, and then took refuge in Switzerland.

The economy of the country has always been characterized by a strong rural imprint, based on elements such as agriculture and livestock, replaced starting from the twentieth century by the tourism industry. This new vocation of the town has not led to urban upheavals, and has always developed respecting the environment and the rural tradition.

In this context, you can make a large number of excursions suitable for every type of need: both simple walks and challenging routes, up to the possibility of using mountain bikes profitably.

Finally, the remains of the medieval fortifications, located in the locality of Cà Baetti, deserve mention.
