Jenesien, in Italian: San Genesio Atesino, is a comune (municipality) in the province of South Tyrol in northern Italy, located about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) northwest of the city of Bolzano.
Bordered to the east by the Val Sarentino with the Talvera and to the west by the Valle dell´Adige, it is located on the Salto plateau (Salten) overlooking Bolzano to the north, to which it is connected both with a provincial road and with the San Genesio cableway, which leads from Bolzano to S. Genesio in a quarter of an hour.
The genesis and development of the locality, albeit positioned at an altitude, are deeply intersected with the history of the major center of Bolzano. It has in fact been hypothesized that the San Genesio market, attested in Bolzano since 1208, is to be traced back to the market that developed around the mountain patronage as its natural predecessor.
The toponym is attested as "mons Sancti Genesii" in 1186 and as "St. Zenesius" and "St. Genesienperch" in 1336 and corresponds to the name of the saint to whom the village church is dedicated.
