Hallau (officially Unterhallau until 1934) is a political municipality in the Swiss canton of Schaffhausen. The viticulture community is located in Klettgau north of the Rhine on the border between Germany and Switzerland. The hamlet of Wunderklingen on the other side of the Hallauerberg also belongs to the community.
Hallau was first mentioned in a document in 1064. Hall- probably goes back to Old High German hal "salt source", -au to Old High German ouwa "Land am Wasser".
In 1457 the community acquired the place Wunderklingen from Junker Heinrich von Erzingen, in which Hallau from then on exercised the lower jurisdiction. The mountain church St. Moritz was built in 1491. The village church of St. Moritz, also incorrectly called St. Ulrich, had existed for much longer, as archaeological research in 1954 showed. In 1526 Oberhallau separated from Hallau (Unterhallau) and formed its own community. In 1547 the 16 flags were mentioned for the first time, into which all able-bodied Hallau residents were assigned to defend the village. Today the 16 flags live on in the Hallau table cooperatives. The plague raged in Hallau in 1564, 1611 and 1629. In 1629 the first Hallau church book was created. In 1713, Oberhallau also separated from the Hallau community. In 1831 the people of Hallau moved armed to the city of Schaffhausen to enforce their will with the new constitution. In 1853 the local museum was founded by Johann Georg Pfund. In 1871 Hallau took on 100 Bourbaki soldiers; one died and was buried near the mountain church. In 1895, the Hallau water and electricity works (WEH) were built in Wunderklingen.
Hallau is one of the most famous wine-growing regions in Switzerland and is part of the Schaffhausen Pinot Noirland. The Rimuss winery, known for its non-alcoholic sparkling wines, has its production facility in Hallau.
